Project overview

Design and implementation of the Gabosch Dam in Amsterdam.

The project is being delivered through a 15-phase construction programme covering site preparation, embankment works, spillway construction, intake works and ancillary infrastructure.

Scope of work

• Hydrological and hydraulic studies
• Geotechnical investigation and dam wall design
• Spillway, outlet works and intake tower design
• Environmental authorisation and stakeholder engagement
• Construction supervision across all 15 phases

Engineering challenges

As a Category III dam, the design is governed by the South African Dam Safety Regulations. Significant geotechnical and hydrological work was required to confirm foundation suitability and to size the spillway for extreme flood events.

Outcomes

Once commissioned, the dam will store 1.1 Mm³ for raw water supply, supporting the Gert Sibande District's long-term water resource plan.
