Project overview

Rehabilitation and upgrading of internal streets in Ermelo, Bethal and Amersfoort as well as provincial haulage routes.

AFI Consult provided full road engineering services from condition assessment through detailed design and construction supervision, working in coordination with ESKOM and provincial road authorities.

Scope of work

  • Pavement condition assessment across the haulage network
  • Geotechnical investigation and pavement design
  • Road geometric and drainage design
  • Stormwater management and culvert upgrades
  • Construction supervision and contract administration

Engineering challenges

Coal haulage roads experience extreme axle-loading from heavy trucks. The pavement designs were optimised to handle these loads using engineered subgrade improvements and high-strength wearing courses.

Outcomes

The R100M+ programme restored the haulage network's serviceability and protected ESKOM's coal supply chain — a critical component of national energy security.
