Mthashana TVET College plays a central role in developing skills across KwaZulu-Natal, serving about 12,000 students each year through ten campuses and skill centres coordinated from its Abaqulusi office in Vryheid. The institution supports a broad academic mix, from engineering disciplines to business, utilities, hospitality, information technology and agriculture.

AFI Consult’s partnership with the College began in October 2020 and has grown into a substantial programme of work spanning conditional and structural assessments, disability infrastructure evaluations, maintenance planning and full-scale implementation aligned with ECSA guidelines and GCC 2015 standards.

Infrastructure that supports education

Across the partnership, AFI has delivered 25 projects focused on creating safer, more functional and more inclusive learning environments. The value of this work is measured not only in physical upgrades, but in the improved day-to-day experience of students, educators and contractors working across the campuses.

  • Safer and more conducive learning environments.
  • Better accessibility for students with disabilities.
  • Practical engagement opportunities for engineering and building students.
  • Fair participation for both emerging and established contractors.
  • Facilities that move closer to world-class standards.

Impact on students and communities

Since the collaboration began, AFI’s work has helped improve the learning environment for more than 72,000 students. That impact reaches beyond the campus edge: better infrastructure strengthens educational delivery, supports local employment and helps create environments where young people can prepare for meaningful participation in South Africa’s economy.

As selective projects conclude, the partnership stands as a practical example of how infrastructure investment can directly strengthen education. By combining planning, technical oversight and implementation discipline, AFI Consult has helped the College create spaces that are more resilient, inclusive and future-ready.
