In developing economies, dependable water infrastructure is inseparable from public trust, growth and day-to-day quality of life. When critical assets begin to fail, the impact is felt immediately through dry taps, service disruptions and rising pressure on already constrained systems.

AFI Consult is the appointed consulting engineer for the comprehensive renewal of Aeroton Reservoir, a critical 45 megalitre Johannesburg Water asset. The 50-year-old, 88 metre diameter reinforced concrete structure supports supply to roughly 7,000 households directly and influences a broader network serving nearly 13,800 properties, including Diepkloof.

Clear project objectives

The renewal programme combines detailed investigations, remedial design and full construction monitoring. The objectives are practical and outcome-driven: limit water loss, restore optimal operating conditions, reduce service interruptions, improve operational safety and extend the useful life of the reservoir for future generations.

That work reflects AFI Consult’s broader infrastructure commitment: tackling water challenges in a way that strengthens service delivery and helps restore confidence in essential public systems.

Complex challenges on a live asset

The Aeroton project has presented several layers of technical and delivery complexity. The absence of reliable as-built information has required deeper investigative work to understand the existing structure. The size and height of the reservoir have created access challenges for elevated inspections. At the same time, every intervention has had to be planned around a live operational system so that broader supply continuity is protected.

Construction management has also needed to remain adaptive in response to contractor capability, unforeseen subsurface conditions and long-lead procurement items. Those factors make coordination, problem-solving and technical oversight as important as the remedial design itself.

Throughout the project, collaboration between stakeholders and specialist teams has remained central. AFI Consult’s role is to maintain technical integrity while guiding the reservoir back toward safe, efficient and reliable long-term operation.
